School Fundraising Events

What is one of the biggest clues that a new school year has begun? For me, it’s the barrage of requests to support school fundraisers.

Oh yes, my friends. The catalogs of overpriced Christmas wrapping, knick knacks, chocolates, and recipe books have arrived.

The truth is I’m a sucker for those darn catalogs. I adore the canned caramel popcorn and gift bag packages. I can’t help it. Chocolate, gift ideas, and recipes books I probably won’t ever use; it’s all conveniently in one place for ridiculously inflated prices. But it’s for a good cause…well, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

Remember when riding bikes was all the entertainment kids needed?... and we were thrilled to have a bike!

Vintage: kids going for a bike ride

Last week, one of the neighborhood boys asked if I would buy something from him. Now, I have a soft spot for this boy. He’s funny, rambunctious, and last year he kept coming around to ask if I would go bike riding with him. Not my son, me.

How could I say no when he handed over a catalog?

No more than fifteen minutes later my doorbell rings again. A group of kids armed with catalogs, order forms, and smiles stood on my porch.

“Sorry, guys. He already got me,” I said.

As one, their heads turned toward the grinning imp astride his bicycle at the curb. Lifting his hand, he waved and a peal of laughter floated in the air as he rode away. Groans and cries of “aw man” filled the air as they gave chase, barely pausing to toss their goodbyes and thanks over their shoulders.

Yup, the new school year has officially begun.
